Everyone deserves to know when something at the Port of Providence could affect their health or safety. But after years of fires, chemical spills, train derailments, and other industrial accidents, neighbors still search social media or text friends to learn what is happening.
Emergency Notification
Residents shouldn’t be left guessing about whether it’s safe to stay outside or breathe the air, or whether they should evacuate to protect their families.
The People's Port Authority is working to change that. We're advocating for a multilingual emergency notification system that quickly alerts residents whenever there's a fire, chemical release, hazardous materials incident, or any other event that could impact the community. We're pushing for clear information about how the system works, who will send alerts and when. Our goal is simple: when something happens at the Port, everyone should get the information they need to stay safe—quickly, clearly, and in the language they understand.

A clear and accountable system for emergency notification is one of the recommendations PPA has made to the city and port management as part of the ongoing Master Plan Process.
There is a 14-mile evacuation zone around the Port of Providence if a safety incident occurs. But there is no clear notification system for people living in this zone.
